Our Walnut Tree U13 Girls Football team have got something to be really proud of. They recently entered and won the EFL Cup, a tournament run by MK Dons for secondary schools in Milton Keynes.
In the group stage, they played four games before qualifying for the final, but it wasn’t easy. During the first game against Shenley Brook End they went a goal down in the first few minutes and couldn’t quite manage to pull it back. So the first game ended 1-0 and a place in the final seemed unlikely. After the defeat, the girls were straight back on the pitch again, this time against Brooklands and again they conceded an early goal. However, this time the girls battled back. They put pressure on their opponents and managed to put four goals past Brooklands and come out on top with a 4-1 win. They then went on to win the next two games 1-0 and 2-0, which secured a place in the final.
The girls were nervous and had to play Shenley Brook End once again for the title. They used the emotions of losing their earlier game as motivation. The first half was very tense, with both teams creating several chances but neither managing to secure a goal. Just two minutes into the second half, determination paid off and Nyanzobe managed to bag her eighth goal of the tournament to give a one goal lead. Each girl battled hard and played some fantastic football to secure this lead all the way to the final whistle. A 1-0 win in the final meant that, despite the rocky start, we had won the EFL girls cup, allowing each of our girls to go home with a medal and a big smile.
Each girl put in maximum effort and contributed to the win. Special mention should go to Nyanzobe who scored all eight goals for Walnut Tree!
This win also means that they have now qualified for the next round of the EFL Cup when they will represent MK Dons at the Regional stage of the competition.
A huge well done girls!
